Welcome to second wind, a blog that chronicles my journey as a newbie older woman with sailing. I’ll post about how I started, how I bought a boat, some of the boat work fun, and of course my sailing trips.
Ok, let’s start at the start. In 2021 in the midst of the pandemic, at the passing of a dear friend, and with retirement coming into the horizon, I realised that life wasn’t getting any longer. I guess I panicked a bit, and scared myself silly by mapping out the days I had had, and the days I had left. Even by the most optimistic of views, I had passed the two-thirds part of my life. This was enough to kick me into action and fast.
I had always meant to learn how to sail sometime. With my new calendar firmly planted in my mind, that sometime became now. I enrolled in sailing lessons in August 2021. These were canceled due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions (read lockdown), in my hometown of Sydney, Australia. By the time these eased it was November and I finally started my keelboat lessons in Botany Bay, the start of this whirlwind (and costly) journey.
This blog is intended as a record for myself, but if you’re a woman in your late fifties about to hit sixty, and always wanted to sail but don’t know anyone who does (a niche I know!), then perhaps this will be helpful for you to get started. Enjoy!
